Native to Michigan. Pale green or yellow Flowers in May-June. First flowers between 15-20 years of age. In forest stands, one of the straightest and tallest trees. Very valuable timber tree. Fast growing without common problems of weak wood strength and short lifespan often seen in fast-growing species. Shade intolerant, typically a pioneer species. Soils: Growth is best on moderately deep loams that are moderately moist, well drained and loose textured. Mature trees do not tolerate prolonged flooding.
