Native to Michigan. A medium growing shrub with leaves that are very aromatic when crushed. Flowers grow in showy yellow clusters that appear in early spring before the leaves begin to grow. Fruit is a berrylike red drupe about 1cm long. Dioecious plant so needs male and female plant to produce viable seeds. Common understory shrub of moist woodlands. Most common host plant is the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly.
