Native to Michigan. Extremely slow growing and long lived, taking about 50 years to reach 40 feet on good sites. Highly favorable winter food source for deer. Also used as ornamental tree. Soils: Naturally grows in wet forests and swamps. On upland sites, prefers clays and loams. Can grow in well drained soils as well.
